To compensate for the longer lengths of skirts and dresses, designers slashed the fabric up way past the knee--and an alarming number used their scissors on the fronts, rather than the sides, of skirts. You can thank Belgian designer and critic's darling Haider Ackermann; he introduced the look on the runway a year ago.

Big bold stripes were a welcome reprieve from all the white and beige dominating the Spring 2011 shows. Even Phoebe Philo, the woman who brought minimalism back with such a vengeance, punched up her neutral collection for Celine with big blue or green stripes on boxy shirts or on the side of slim white pants.

CRUSH ON PRINTS
After a pretty tame beginning to the spring collections in New York, things went a little bananas in Milan. Miuccia Prada thumbed her nose at good taste with cotton shirts and dresses covered with bananas--or monkeys. Flower child Stella McCartney showed a collection of slim pastel pants suits, followed by boxy shirts and fly-away dresses printed with bright oranges and lemons.
